One of the most important festivities is the Feast of the Lord of Torrechayoc, Patron Jury of Urubamba, which is celebrated in the months of May or June.
This year, the celebration of this important date has been taking place in a virtual way due to the current situation we are living to maintain social distance.
What is the origin of the celebration of the Lord of Torrechayoc?
I tell you a little about the history of our dear Lord of Torrechayoc, its origin date back to 1860, when a group of devotees placed a cross in an area surrounded by snow in Cusco. Then, in that place they celebrated a mass to inaugurate a section of the road from Urubamba to Lares and in honor of the new cross.
It is said that voices were heard when passing near the cross and the population assured that the Lord spoke to them of the intense cold that it was in that place, therefore the Pastor ordered the transfer of the cross to Urubamba, where the Lord of Torrechayoc was appointed patron of the province.
Since that date, it is one of the most important festivities in our beloved Urubamba.
What activities are carried out at the Feast of the Lord of Torrechayoc?
The party itself begins on the eve when the Lord of Torrechayoc is taken to the Nogalpampa Stadium, which is located a few blocks from our Hotel Agustos Urubamba, where they celebrate a mass in his honor followed by more than 30 incredible dance performances by the faithful inhabitants. At night they burn the fireworks castle that illuminate the night.
On the central day, very early in the morning there are fireworks and they carry out a procession along Torrechayoc avenue to the Plaza de Armas in Urubamba where they perform a mass and bless the crosses.
This festivity also has a bullfight, dressage of foals, and various activities to celebrate our beloved patron of Urubamba.
At the moment, our Agustos Cusco and Urubamba hotels, as well as our entire country, are reinforcing the strict sanitary measures with which we have always operated to celebrate again in a big way in 2021.
