Inti Raymi In Cusco

jun/23/2020
A little bit of history about Inti Raymi…
It was Pachacutec, who started this cultural-religious tradition, carried out in Tahuantinsuyo times to worship the Sun God (God Inti).
This rite gathered the Incas every winter solstice in the imperial city to welcome the God Inti, this celebration lasted 2 weeks, in which they drank chicha, performed dances, burned coca leaves and sacrificed llamas in honor of God Son.
All these activities were carried out to give thanks for the harvests of the year and for all that the land gave them.
For the Incas, the Inti Raymi festival marked the beginning of the new year due to the great importance of this celebration.
With the arrival of the Spanish, this celebration was prohibited in 1572 by the Viceroy Francisco de Toledo.
Since its prohibition, the people of Cusco have looked for ways to keep that tradition alive, and happily they succeeded.
The Inti Raymi is a celebration that revalues the Inca tradition and connects us with our past.
